Make the most of scholarships

Most students would be surprised by the number of scholarships for which they qualify. Unlike student loans, these gifts that don't need to be paid back. They can help you save money and reduce the amount of financial aid you may need. It never hurts to apply. Eligibility is based on merit, need and special characteristics, such as ethnicity or academic interest. Columbia College itself offers a number of scholarships. Below are some tips to help you make the most of your scholarship opportunities.

Scholarship tips:

  1. Start your search in the local community first.
  2. Set a goal for the number of scholarships you want to apply for and stick to it.
  3. Don’t be afraid to apply for the “small” scholarships.
  4. Use a professional email address and consider creating one just for scholarship applications.
  5. If the scholarship requires an essay, make sure you make it personal to you.
  6. If you have trouble writing your essay, try speaking your answer and recording it. Then you can turn that in to your essay.
  7. Proofread, proofread, proofread!
  8. To avoid scams, never provide credit card information, social security number or other personal information on applications.
  9. Understand what the scholarship can be used toward (tuition, books, room & board, etc.).
  10. Believe you are worthy to be the recipient.
